| I've done a bit of writing over the years, mostly for
business magazines, but I've done a lot more fishing. Having said that, I'm
no expert and these pages do not hold gems of wisdom that will help you get
more or bigger fish. They are merely the musings of a fellow traveller who
understands that catching fish is the objective, but not entirely the point,
of fishing. The title is a dead-giveaway: the site is about game fishing and the style is pretty much that of a diary of various fishing trips and seasons from around the world: from my native Scotland to Mauritius in the East and Venezuela in the West. And, as often happens, what started as a hobby site grew arms and legs until it eventually became a full-blown book. The book itself has more chapters, including one on Cabo San Lucas, and it also has extensions to the chapters included on this site. The editors helped to tighten up the grammar too! In February 2004 it was published under the slightly enhanced title Game Fishing Diaries: Details from Fishing in Life and is now available from the following outlets from as little a $3.99 for an eBook: It is also orderable from any good bookstore. I hope you enjoy it and if not, I'm happy to refund your money! This web site has some of the "original" stories that sparked the book off in the first place. I like it because it is a bit rougher than the book; a bit less polish on the grammar and vernacular. So use it as a taster only because there's more to be had in the printed version itself: basically if you like what you read here, you'll love the book...and if not, you saved yourself some $$s! The other great thing about web sites as opposed to books, of course, is that you can set up links and publish pictures to make it all a bit more accessible and enhance the experience. So whether you just browse the site or buy the book - I wish you tight lines. Fish on.

Editorial Reviews Book Description Fishing is a bit more important than a mere hobby. Everyone who fishes knows that. There are lots of "how to" books about fishing: books that will help you get more fish; books that will help you get bigger fish; books that will immerse you in details about matching the hatch; books that will teach you new and innovative ways to fool your chosen quarry. This is not one of those books. Game Fishing Diaries is a book to read when you need reminded of why it's important to go fishing; a book to transport you to your favourite place and a book to whet your appetite for that exotic trip you've yet to take. Game Fishing Diaries is a book to keep you warm in the close season. Treat it like you would your own diary; keep it close to hand, make it a personal pleasure and read it often when you need reminding how good it is to feel a fish on the line. All Customer Reviews
This book grows quietly on you. The first chapter is, perhaps, the weakest which is a pity as it may put one or two people off. But after that it hits its stride and takes you on a world tour full of sharp observation and wit. Oh yes, and a bit of fishing is thrown in too. It's really three books in one: the first bit is pretty much memorabilia - the stuff we all have from our childhood and from the familiar; then there are some great stories about specific trips and countries that almost take you right there onto the beach or the boat. Finally there are some alternatives to fishing and the whole work finishes in a hard hitting piece about the threats to the sport and a reality check for the anti-fishing lobby. McSherry's touch is light and ironic at all times with just a touch of the polemic about it. It makes you smile and think in equal measure. A very good book from a first time author and worth a read whether you
fish for trout, salmon, sailfish or marlin...or even if you don't fish at
all. |
Just on a slight technical note: this website is built by using frames and each heading to each section indexes back to this frame. If you click on the heading when you're in a frame, the result is a bit weird (clicking the back button clears it). There is method in my madness: the individual pages are set to score on the search engines so it is possible for someone to find a page without finding the controlling frame. Hence the option to load this page from the headers. Simple? Thought not....
Mind you, all this technical knowledge isn't really paying off. I can't seem to get a search engine listing for "marlin fishing" but www.directhit.com has me number one for the search phrase "big dodo weed pictures"...
Go figure...
